What is oud?

Oud, also known as agarwood, is a fragrant resin that forms inside the wood of the Aquilaria tree when it becomes affected. In response, the tree produces a dark, resin-rich substance, and that is what gives the wood its intense aroma. In the Middle East, oud has been used for centuries, both in perfumery and as incense.

In modern perfumes, oud is often rebuilt wholly or partly as an accord, using synthetic molecules and other woody materials. That says nothing about quality on its own, because a well-made oud accord can smell beautiful. It is simply worth knowing that an oud perfume does not automatically contain real agarwood oil.

What does oud smell like?

Oud is hard to sum up in a single word. The foundation is woody and resinous, often with a smoky, sometimes leathery or slightly animalic undertone. Some compositions are soft, sweet and almost balsamic, while others are dark, dry and bold. That range is exactly why oud fragrances differ so much from one another.

In this selection, oud often appears alongside:

  • Amber and tonka: warm, sweet and enveloping.
  • Spices and saffron: rich, peppery and slightly metallic.
  • Rose: a classic Middle Eastern pairing, floral and deep at the same time.
  • Leather and incense: dark, smoky and full of character.
  • Patchouli and musk: earthy, soft and skin-like.
  • Bergamot: a fresh opening that lightens the heavy wood.

How to choose an oud perfume

Start with the occasion. A soft oud with musk and amber suits everyday wear, whereas a dark, smoky oud with leather or incense feels more like an evening fragrance. In colder months, warm and resinous compositions tend to shine, while in summer lighter oud scents with bergamot or rose are often more comfortable.

Also consider the concentration. An eau de parfum is generally a little lighter and more approachable, while an extrait de parfum is more concentrated and intense, so you often need less of it. The range includes both men's and unisex fragrances, and in practice oud is worn by everyone regardless of the label.

How to wear oud perfume

Oud is powerful, so start with a small amount. Apply it to pulse points such as the wrists, neck and inner elbows, where the skin is warm and the scent develops nicely. Avoid rubbing your wrists together, as that can dull the opening. Spraying clothing can help the scent linger, but check that the fabric is not sensitive first, since some oud fragrances can leave marks. If you enjoy layering, you can pair oud with a light, fresh fragrance underneath or on top.

Try a sample first

Because oud varies so much from one composition to another, it makes sense to try before you commit. For many fragrances we also offer samples and decants, so you can live with a scent on your skin for a few days before choosing a full bottle. Please note that some fragrances are temporarily sold out. For those you can join a waiting list, although we cannot promise when they will return.

Frequently asked questions

What is oud perfume?

Oud perfume is perfume in which oud, or agarwood, plays a leading role. It smells woody and resinous, and sometimes smoky, leathery or slightly animalic. It is often blended with amber, rose, saffron or musk.

Does an oud perfume contain real agarwood?

Not always. In modern perfumes, oud is often rebuilt wholly or partly as an accord using other ingredients. That can smell wonderful, but it does not mean every fragrance contains real agarwood oil.

Is oud perfume only for men?

No. Oud is worn by everyone. Our selection includes both men's and unisex fragrances, and pairings with rose, saffron or musk can make an oud come across as soft and floral.

What is the difference between eau de parfum and extrait de parfum?

An extrait de parfum is more concentrated than an eau de parfum, so it usually smells deeper and more intense. An eau de parfum tends to feel a little lighter and more approachable.

Can I try an oud perfume before buying a full bottle?

For many fragrances you can order a sample or decant. This is handy with oud, because the scent varies a lot between compositions and can also develop differently on every skin.

What if a fragrance is sold out?

Some fragrances are temporarily sold out. You can usually join the waiting list, but we cannot promise a date or any availability.
